2 pipe steam system
I worked on a steam system that was a two pipe system. The supply and return both go into the bottom of the radiator and both have valves on them and all the radiators have vents. THere are no traps on any of the radiators and all of the returns are dry returns. The problem was steam coming out of the returns before the supply on two radiators and the radiators would not heat. I removed the main vents which were at the end of the returns and I moved them to the end of the two mains and I thought that would fix it but according to the customer it made it worse. What else can I do other than removing vents and adding traps etc.?0 -
are there check valves
on the discharge of the radiators to the dry returns? if so clean/replace the bad ones..

This could be an old system (before two pipe trap system)that has two steam feed lines to the radiator, since the radiators have a valve on each side and also has an air vent. Follow the two lines from one of the radiators and see if they are actually coming off two different mains.

I think I just read about those old systems yesterday in "The Lost Art of Steam Heating." It's on page 228...

That's a two-pipe air-vent system
basically a one-pipe setup with return lines added. Keep the pressure low, vent the steam mains well but DO NOT vent the returns, that would cause a lot of banging.

The steam vents are working.0 -
steamhead
I did not vent the returns. I removed the vents from the returns and vented the ends of the mains. Can you think of anything else I should look for?0 -
have you determined which radiator is the one
that is blowing thru into the return? how about orificeing the inlet to it.
