home conversion from elec baseboard to hot water baseboard

I will be doing a conversion from elec baseboard to hot water heat in about two months, central ny area. My house is a 20 yr old split level w/ 6" sidewalls and r-40 ceiling. Half of the lower level is below grade and the house is a little over 1400sq ft total The basement slab was also poured on 2" of poly. A friend of mine will be doing the work for me and has told me we need aout 24000 btus upstais and 18000 downstairs. the boiler will be a buderus ga124/23, a buderus indirect L-135 tank and a r2107 controller. The boiler will be fired by propane. The upstairs will have one kick space heater in the kitchen followed by baseboard in the great room and ending with a radiator in the bedroom. baseboard also in the bathroom. Downstairs will be all baseboard. It will be a three zone system total. Any suggestions - Please keep in mind I'm a layman but took a lot of ideas from this forum. My friend has done lots of weil mcclains but never a buderus. Thanks in advance Bob

hay bob have you checked into oil prices in your area you may find it's cheaper to run oil then propane

you could then use the g115 boiler with riello burner i have this with the 2107 and lt160

also just a tip since you will have the 2107 get the indoor bfu room sensor it will make the 2107 run much better because it will see your actual indoor load and adjust the boiler temp just right.

and you will be on constant circulation witch is real nice no temp swings. if you can home run every thing with one pump

also if i was you try and use as much panel rads as you can

    good luck

    Piping

Instead of doing 3 zones, why not just home run everything and stick TRVs on most of the baseboards? My house was converted from electric in the early 80's about 6 years after it was built. The main is 1.25" black iron with monoflos and .75" branches. Whoever did it, did a nice job because it works well and the heat is very even but I can't help but think how much nicer it would have been if all the piping had been done in PEX and just came back to manifolds near the boiler.

If you are going propane instead of oil, why not get a modulating condensing boiler?

I thought of using more panel radiators and also using the gb142, but wouldn't the modulating boiler be better for in floor radiant heat? Our local home show is in March so hopefully I can get some more ideas then also. I'm open to ideas and I'm certain this is going to be a more even and economical system to go with. Thanks-- Bob

    Panel rads

and a GB would be a PERFECT match.

Size the panels so that they will heat your home with the lowest possible water temp, say 140 degrees. The boiler will modulate it's consumption according to demand.

There is a new control that will be available from Buderus very soon that allows for outdoor reset. Or you could just use the RC-10 that comes with the boiler and allow it to modulate that way.

The mod/con boilers are not just for radiant systems. ANY system benefits from modulation.
