Replacing Radiator Valves in Two-Pipe Steam System

Hello,
I'm going to replace several radiator supply valves on a two-pipe steam system. The valves currently there are 3/4" Hoffman Specialty Co. angled, blade-handled "modulating" valves. I'm trying to figure out what the best replacement valves would be. I could go with:
1.) old-fashioned brass (or bronze) valves that are just ON or OFF (cheapest)
2.) old-fashioned brass "modulating" valves (manual), like the ones that are currently on there (can't find a price online)
3.) thermostatic valves (expensive)

I'd like to know the pros and cons of these three choices.

Thanks for your help,
Nelson

    Hi Nelson,

The valve you describe most likely does have an internal adjustment to help balance the flow of steam throughout your system. If you go with the standard valve, you may have trouble getting it to control the flow of steam correctly. I would recommend the adjustable valves, Mepco and Marsh make them, maybe some others. The thermostatic valve are great, but might be better suited if you do the whole system, less the radiator in the room with the t-stat if that is how you cycle the boiler.

    Best regards, Pat
