clogged heat exchanger on steam system

Did you install a strainer in the feed to the flate plate HX? With a Y strainer and blow down valve, the owner could blow it off at the same time he does the LWCO. Steam boiler naturally create "mud". We use tank type units for this application for the very reason you posted...flat plate HXs plug up if you don't install strainers.

clogged heat exchanger on steam system

    Hello heat people,

I have a job where I installed a flat plate hx for a bb loop. The boiler was replaced at the same time; this is about two years ago.

The hx is clogging up. It takes only a few minutes to clear it out, but I din't know why it's still acting up after two years.

The piping to the hx is coming off the bottom of the boiler ( the other return tap, I used a double tapped bushing); will this happen forever until it gets moved (at least the supply) off of the bottom of the boiler?

Is it crud from the old steam pipes, or just crud that can not be avoided whatsoever?

Thanks for any help on this,
