Boiler Control question

New boiler installed with an indirect water heater, but the oil burner keeps the boiler water between 170 and 185 all the time. Is this correct? I thought the burner would only come on when the thermostat called for heat or the indirect called for heat. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mike

what type of aquastat do you have on your boiler?

If you have a tankless coil this is the way it is controlled. If you have any other type of hot water it is best to keep some heat in an oil boiler but 120 degrees will be ok. As a tech who services these things regularly keeping a boiler slightly warm makes annual service much better and keeps less scale in the boiler so heat transfer is better and more efficient. (how have you been Mike?)

Keep in mind that the actual low temperature with a Honeywell aquastat is 10 degrees below the low limit setting. Unless you are doing a true cold start, to prevent condensation in the boiler, the boiler should not be allowed to go below 115 degrees with oil which would be a low limit setting of 125 degrees.
