Sorry I should have mentioned in the post. It's a Viessmann horizontal tank.

I'm in the market for a indirect and am leaning towards a SS ultra. What the consensus on these? Any other favorites?? Thanks fellas!!!!!0 -
SS
we sell them but I prefer the Crown Mega stor it has a smooth coil it also has a convex bottom and a removable inspection/cleaning port in the top . You can't get inside an Ultra unless your using a sawzall . The Crown is an imitation Viessmann tank . The V is the best followed by C then the Ultra IMHO . The SS is cheaper though .0 -
Don't count out the Phase III
from Triangle Tube. That's a great design in terms of a HX - even better than the Viessmann in terms of recovery rate, IIRC. The larger the HX the bigger the benefit to the user if they use a condensing boiler because a lower supply water temperature can be used. The lower the supply temperature, the more the condensing boiler can condense, helping energy efficiency.
But even if you're running a lower-temp system, the lower the temperature needed to achieve acceptable recovery rates, the lower the standby losses from the boiler once it has satisfied the indirect.
Indirects with small, finned HXs certainly work... but they work best in conditions where the water supply isn't hard on the HX and the boiler water temperature is high. For such designs, recovery rates are usually quoted with supply temperatures of 180°F. Plus, as you point out, they can be sold at a lower price point because they contain a lot less metal than their competitors.0 -
Tanks
Viessmann tanks are incredibly well built; they're also close to twice the price of the Crown. In my opinion, Crown tanks are the next best thing. Coil diameter is important (triangle tube excepted) when choosing a tank. I would recommend a tank that had a large diameter, low head loss coil. How about a 53 gallon horizontal Viessmann tank with a 119 gallon solar-heated version below it for preheat?

Well...
for the money I think the Superstor Contender series is the bomb. The 80 is especially nice. Yes it is all steel but w/ the proper care it will last a long time. kpc

S.S. Ultra
Is a well built, compeditive tank.
We install them all the time with No Backs.
I see no reason to go down to the contender.
I sell three tanks. S.S. for a replacement, Buderus when doing a complete system and Viessmann when the customer wants the Very Best.

SuperStor
We have been using the Super Stor tanks for years. Probably around 20 years. We have been happy with them, and haven't had a problem. We have replaced 2 SuperStor tanks under warranty that we didn't install. The Phase III tanks that I have seen did not have a drain valve to empty the tank. The connections are on top. That put them out of the running for us.0
