trane steam replacement

Goes to show you really can't stop a Trane! Especially one that's run this long.

    Trane steam replacement

Just finished this one yesterdaqy had her steaming but wasn,t happy with the venting so i went back today added 2 gorton #1 on the supply main drilled and tapped one and replaced the old vacume vents on the return with gortons also .We removed the trane return trap and the check valves and also re piped all of the wet returns .The system is a two pipe with a mix of stell convectors on the first floor and cast convectors on the second floor all the first floor traps are locatred in the basement and the second floor traps are tightly installed under the convectors .The original boiler was a us raditor 4 section converted from coal to oil she was losing alot of water last year i was told but nobody could locate the leaks the returns where all mudded and so was the boiler ended up being the boiler lower push nipples rotted right through when she was steaming she was leaking behind the combustion chamber into the concrete and disappearing couldn't even see a wet spot .After replacing the vents the main heated much faster and all the rads through out the home where blazing .peace clammy

  • great work

    Hi clammy,

Thanks for the post. Excellent job of repair and restoration to a fine old system. Hate those recessed convectors where you can't work on the traps.

    1) steam up - the near boiler piping looks picture perfect

    2) air out - great job of vent selection and location

    3) water back - you really did it here, removal of check valves and new wet return will keep it all flowing

    Thanks for sharing.

    Best regards, Pat
