CO Poisoning

Heating season is here again and every year we read about deaths caused by CO poisoning. What we don't read about is the people who survive CO poisoning and what often must be done to save their lives. So here it is from my perspective. I'm a critical care RN who works in an ICU. The worst cases are intubated and place on mechanical ventalators with about half a dozen IV medications running at the same time, foley catheters in place, art line to monitor BP and so on. The not so worst cases are place on BiPap/CPAP (positive pressure oxygen delivery systems) again with a half a dozen or so IV medications running. Both of which usually means a stay of about a week in the ICU at a cost of better than $2000 a day. People usually end up bruised and bloated from all the meds and multiple blood draws not to mention very sore from inactivity despite frequent repositioning in bed. Then there are the families of these people and the emotional turmoil they go through. Because despite all that we can do there is no guarantee the patient will ultimately survive and some don't. If you have a fuel burning appliace in your home GET IT CHECKED by a professional. CO POISONING KILLS AND INCAPCITATES.
