Steam Pipe Insulation
Denise
Member Posts: 2
We recently purchased a 4700 sq ft 1900ish Victorian with steam heat. The pipes in the basement are uninsulated and we need to get ready for winter. What is the best and most economical way to insulate (if those two words go together!)? Someone told us to use a product that is tubular and snaps around the pipes with special fixtures for the joints. What is this stuff called and are there several companies that make it?

Pipe insulation.
Here's a good article on steam pipe insulation. You will probably have to cut and paste the URL.

Just make sure when you do insulate that you use fiberglass and not the poly cell stuff. It makes a big stinky mess when the steam comes on.
