Not Heating--Question

Anybody know how a device for measuring the percentage of moisture in wood works?
Does it measure the resistance through the wood? And, if it does, why couldn't I use a good ohm meter to measure and then refer to a table to find out how dry my firewood is before I burn it?
Just wondering.

two types
Tim,
There are two types. One type you jab some pins into the wood, and it measured the resistance. The other type is non-destructive, and it uses the effect that moisture has on the coupling of a radio transmitter and receiver in the unit. The pin type is more accurate, but the n-d type works across a broader range of materials.
