The way we always worked it, If you give a little you will get a little. Depending upon the size of your company, the rules can bend in the employees favor. What time did he get home?
If the employee takes the service truck home with him and has to be at work at 8:00am, is he on the clock before 8am?
If he starts his first call from his house, does the call start at 8 am?
If the employee want OT for the travel to his class, and the class is over in 6.5hrs, does he get paid for less than 8hrs?
If the boss has a good employee, and he is a good boss, things should be easy to work out.

    TRAVEL TIME

TECHS TAKE VANS HOME. START TIME IS 8AM. FARTHEST TECH AWAY FROM OFFICE IS 20 MINUTES. IF WE ARE SENDING TO TRAINING CLASS THAT STARTS AT 8AM AND IS 35 MINUTES AWAY SHOULD THEY BE PAID OVERTIME TO GET TO SCHOOL?

    State Regs

If the employee is driving your truck, tools and inventory to an appointment, it's considered "job time". State regulations also come into play. Ask your state labor division for their rules. Some employees will challenge the right to be paid for all time, if it's the law and you are not in compliance.
