Cheap 86 AFUE
Hey Ken,
The local guys that will be installing boiler/controls for a project in buffalo NY.. those particular locals! Most of the time, our project's heat source selections are limited to what the on-site plumbing and heating guy is familiar with.... or willing to learn.
Why, you wanna do a road trip? ;)

Here's the deal!
Have a system, local codes require an 86 AFUE heat source for this house. Only a 20kBTU/hr load, so spending a lot on high end technology doesn't make sense. Warmboard, so water temperature requirements are low, low low and the DHW load is a single bathroom and kitchen, nothing major there either. Locals are not familiar with Baxi-lunas (my first choice).
Any ideas for cheap 86 AFUE's? Are any of those "on demand" water heaters rated for AFUE?
Thanks for any ideas!0 -
Hey Rob, What do you mean the "Locals are not familiar with"???????
Come on now. What locals are you referring too????

Slantfins VSPH might do it
with a Danfoss/Esbe return temp protection. Haven't tried one yet, but they sure look good.

What about an electric boiler? I've used Burnhams in a couple of situations and was very please with the installation0 -
That certainly is local, just not to me!!!!!!!!!! Wrong time of year for a road trip, unless it is very rewarding$$$$$$$$

Thanks for the replies guys, gave me some decent ideas here.0 -
For ultimate efficency..........
Is a ground source heat pump in the realm of possibilty? A little 2 ton unit would probably heat for <$100 a month in the dead of winter. Just a thought.
Other than that go for something modulating and condensing like the above mentioned T-50. It'll still have plenty of bump for an indirect in a smaller house like that.0 -
well, for a load this low, I'm not aiming for ultimate efficiency, just trying to satisfy code cheaply. The owner would never see payback upscaling the heat source in this case, in all liklihood.0 -
Never is a long time
I have learned the hard way to "never say never".
What if fuel costs double from what they are today?
Run it past the HO and see what he says. Let him make that decision instead of talking yourself out of it. Who knows?0 -
Normally I agree, and on a larger load I would be right there with you... but I get paid to make recommendations that make sense, not to just outline ideal systems. I lay out the options. 50 therms a year difference between that all-in-one baxi and a munchkin w/storage tank... that's a very long potential payback period.0 -
Rob, have you looked at the Embassy Axiom???
