replacing steam boiler drawing

I am replacing a steam boiler in a building with 8 condos. There are two small hot water zones of baseboard in the basement apts. They are currently using an external tankless with a storage tank for hot water. I want to put in a 119 gallon superstore. After I have measured the EDR how would I figure out how much to add for the superstor and the 2 hot water zones? I have attached a drawing of how I am going to do it please let me know if I am going to do something wrong. Thanks

I'm trying to post the picture and it wont work I'll have to try again later
  • If the HW zones are big enough

why not install a separate HW boiler to run them and the indirect? That would be a lot less boiler to heat up in the summer.....

    I'm with Steamhead...

it is simpler...yes it can work but there can be some drawbacks to IDHW off steam...It also gives you some redundancy in case on system fails. Higher effciancy, etc.
You need between 269K and 300K btu in order to get the published ratings.
Yes two boilers are more $ up front...but there are benifits. kpc

    good idea

I would need a big boiler just to keep up with the hot water demand and then when the hot water is satisfied wouldn;t the boiler be oversized?
  • It depends on the loads

In most cases you wouldn't have to oversize the boiler to accomodate the indirect, since at anything less than design conditions there is excess boiler capacity. However, if the loads in the baseboard zones are smaller than those of the indirect, I'd size the boiler to the indirect and use priority zoning so only one load runs at a time.

    I thought an 80

I thought an 80 would do it. But I called an HTP rep and he said I needed a 119 and a storage tank. I was going to put in the 119 and not the storage tank. It's 8 full baths 8 full kitchens and 8 laundries. Seems like overkill to me but thats what they told me I needed

    gas

It's oil to gas conversion. the gas company said they will supply the steam boiler for free so they are switching to gas
  • Keyspan?

  • Keyspan?

what boiler are they supplying? Was it sized properly?

    the plot....

thickens. Which boiler would they "give" you..the hot water or steam? A condensing gas boiler would be nice..kpc

    i will size it

Keyspan does not size the boiler the contractor who puts it in sizes it. they will not supply a condensing boiler. If I put in two boilers I think they will only supply the steam boiler and I fill supply the other one. If I eliminate the two hot water zones and the indirect then it will be a PIN8. The hot water boiler would be doing to zones of baseboard about 36,000 btu and the indirect.
