Steam leaking from Radiator Shut off valves

is wrapped around the stem clockwise, above that little insert, and snugly so the nut will fit over top of it.

Steam is leaking out of all radiator shut off valves. Can you tell me the first step on taking care of this situation? Can we replace the valves? Can we repack the valves? I can't seem to find the valve the name is Schaible.
Can I put in an elbow, seeing I will not be shutting off the radiators? I have replaced the air vents on the radiators. They seem to be working fine now, but the steam is coming out the valves.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS
  • Haven't seen Schaible in a while

But no matter, you may be able to stop the leaking by tightening the packing nuts. Don't force them or they'll break! If tightening doesn't stop the leaks, just repack them.

Unless you break something, those valves should last a long long time.

I have the shut off valve apart. Is the packing a small metal fitting inside of the stem? Can you tell me how to repack it? I took the packing nut off...there seems like there is a small metal insert...is that what needs to be replaced?

I am new to this stem heat...my girlfriends house has a 3 year old boiler. Everything else seems to be working fine with some minor problems fixed that was solved with this site.

Thanks for all the input and help!!!

I had the exact same problem you are talking about, I just simply replaced all of my leaking vents, I had about 8 of them. I priced them out locally, at about $30 each...I decided to order from www.plumbinggoods.com, they did not have the same kind I had but they are only about $8.00 a piece so I ordered some that I though would work and they did. I fired up the boiler this morning and all of the new vents work great, no more leaking and they are so easy to open and close. Good luck
