If the job i am called out to was done improperly and that guy is now sitting home with his money i will tell h/o that they should call him back and ask several question 1 did you pull a permit? 2 is the unit installed by manf.specs? 3 tech came to my house and said unit is unsafe and suggests i turn it off for safety reasons now my family has no heat and possible co poison.....suggest you hire someone real fast to fix what you did not do correctly.....because if you took my hard earned money and said you were a heating contractor and did not do the job correctly the first time you cant come back except to give me all my money back.....i as a contractor will NOT fix what some other contractor did nor will i use his big box purchased crap.....

Bad steam boiler piping
Question, what would you all say or not say to the home owner if you went on an annual tune up and find a brand spanking new installation that was not remotely correct? would you just do the tune up and leave? or be incline to point out quite a few "mistakes"? what is politically correct in the trades?0 -
Do you
If I know of the installer I would attempt to contact them directly and discuss the issue with them. Of course most installation's require a permit so the installing company should be listed. If it is a safety issue I would contact the local inspector and point out what I percieve as the issue's. The company I work for also requires the tech's to check with a supervisor if it is a safety issue and they make the decision as to whether we leave the unit running or not or if we will even touch it. I would however make sure I have all my duck's in a row cause it get's real nasty if your the one that's wrong..0 -
OOOH !
My first thought would be to give the offending installer a chance to make it right, unless it was an infraction that would be considered completely and totally UNSAFE.
As a rule, I usually refer to the instruction manual and the related drawings that show the best way to pipe the manufacturers product.(They have WAY more time to play out the different scenerios than any of us could ever hope for, and have published the most appropriate way to make their product work to the best of its ability).
If the drawings vary from the installed scenerio greatly, I would be inclined to show the owner the liturature, and have them make the next decision.
I don't like being thrown under the bus, but if I made a mistake...I have to make it right. It's my job. Chris0 -
We gladly repair "low bidder" work all the time. You don't have to point it out. The work comes to you.
If I see bad stuff, I ask questions about how the house heats. Usually there are "issues". We then begin the fixing process.0 -
Biged
You should have such language written in your agreement so as to prevent YOUR going out on a emergency service call at 3am for free. If the installation wasn't right and the unit kicks off or has possibly a disasterous outcome and you gave it your blessing (by servicing it) YOUR the one they are going after.
"Why didn't you tell us something was wrong?"
Tell them in writing. The lawsuit you prevent could be your own.
