If you are forced to do copper pipe soldering close to (say) a wooden floor, what do you use to avoid getting burn-marks on the wood? Is there such a thing as asbestos sheet except without the asbestos?

single wall flue pipe works well in a jam.0 -
This stuff works!
spray it on wood or even paper and hold a torch to it. For a while, anyways It generally "buys" enough time to solder next to wood.

My Dad gave me a piece of 6" x6" flat copper sheet 20 years ago which I still use today. I can screw it to a floor joist (or whatever you want to protect) and have never left a mark0 -
While I cannot say I've never burned a joist or other rough carpentry, I have had very good luck with flooring and moldings by using skills my Grandfather taught me.
If I burned something, he would bash my knuckles with a 10" wrench. I use a correctly adjusted flame, carefully applied. You'd be surprised just where I can squeeze these battered knuckles while holding a torch.0 -
Yep , the fluepipe
works good , better with an acetylene B tank with a size A-3 Turbo Torch tip .0 -
I use an old cookie sheet that my wife rejected for whatever reason. Wet rags under it help too if necessary.
I have also used a piece of transite shingle.0
