mixing wegtable oil and home heating oil

do tend to have slightly higher deleterious effects on a heating system than the fuels for which they were originally designed. At the very least you might accelerate the wear on your fuel pump due to the decreased lubricity of vegetable based oils. Suntec make pumps that can handle more than one fuel type.

Unless you have a source for new unused oil you will need to filter filter filter. Check out greasecar.com for information on SVO fuel conversions.

mixing vegtable oil with fuel oil

I would like to know if it is ok to mix vegtable oil and fuel oil and what if any problems could there be. I have been told that veggie oil is hard on gaskets and o rings.

    I don't think straight

vegtable has the same flash point, viscosity of #2 oil. "Biofuel" has been processed to match specs of #2.
I would think veggie oil needs to be processed also.

    Clean Burn

waste oil boiler company have some cooking oil boilers under testing. Filters are one issue, but the preheaters also need to be cranked up in temperature, to get cooking oil to combust. They tell me it burn with much less ash byproduct than used crankcase oils, however. More like ATFs.

This is also an issue with synthetic oils. The new high mileage oils don't like to ignite. Their getting the flash points up pretty high to extend the life of these oils.

100% bio-diesel (B-100) tends to eat up the seals on the fuel units. That is why we see B-20 (20% biodiesel) and less. You will change the gel point significantly. Another problem with B-100 is that the gear type fuel units will churn it into butter. I would expect similar problems with cooking oil. I have a customer that wants to try the cooking oil blend in a waste oil heater. I'll try to post the results of that test in the spring.

    Veg oil in Burner

    1) Veg oil actually has a greater lubrcity than heating oil so it won't do the pump any harm that way. however it could turn to butter as previuosly suggested.
    2) If you want to use Veg oil you need to use a syphon oil nozzle, Using air pressure at about 10-15 psi.
    3) Suggest you log on to www.altfuelfurnace.com and get some advice on how to run Vag oil.

    If you are interested,

there is a Yahoo group that discusses this type of thing:

    Alternative Furnace Yahoo Group

might be useful to you. I have a customer who wants to run straight biodiesel in her new boiler and I will need to find one that is the most friendly to that type of fuel.

    Cheers,
    Nick
