Distribution System Loss

I was wondering, are there any industry-accepted rules-of-thumb for distribution system heat loss... like 10% or 15%of capacity or the like?
I suppose one could estimate at least mechanical room losses by estimating pipe lengths and sizes, average water temperature, and estimated mech room temp (this would depend on whether the room is pretty well isolated from outdoors or not) and insulated vy non-insulated fittings and etc. but was more wondering if ther is any accepted rule of thumb used out there.
Thanks.
Cheers, Guys.

If I remember in the old IBR days, they always allowed a factor of 15%.
In reality the heat is not lost it is emmited in the space
and contributes to heating the building.
