Slant Fin dry base boiler replacement

nice install.. we use burnham alot but never used the riello burner on the v series boiler,, how is the noise level compared to beckett and is there any problem getting them with the riello, our supply house gives the answer that they have none in stock with riello and they cost more and you have to special order and my boss passes the burner on,,,thank you mike

Not from lack of work though . I'm averaging 3 or 4 boiler changeouts a week . Hardly any are emergencies . With the coming winter everyone wants to upgrade .

This was still up and running . Good numbers too after 25 years , but the homeowner thought it was time . I like the individual air cans on each return , a nice touch .

When we took the 4 section off the back of my van , the cast iron sliced a 3 inch cut into my palm , pretty deep . I've been warning myself and everyone else that this was bound to happen , so we're all VERY CAREFUL when dropping the boiler off . Bob O'Connor - NJ , the bear finally got me . It wasn't the worst I got and it didn't hurt , so I cleaned it out , wrapped it up and went back to work . Me and Tony tag teamed the piping . The Mueller 1 inch M copper was almost impossible to use - we resorted to hammers again . The 3/4 M was bad , but not as bad as the 1 inch . We also knocked down the 2 line voltage zones to low voltage so the homeowner could throw on his own digital stats . And what a homeowner - all the soda or water we wanted , a pizza and knots for lunch , and a generous tip . After seeing all the blood down my arm he suggested we stop the job , finish another day and he would drive me to the hospital ! What a great homeowner .

    Nice!!!

We're in the middle of a V8-4 Steamer. Taking out a JOT5 that we installed when we worked for my Grandfather in '91. Both of us looked at each other and realized that we were here before. The same rotted Bilco doors gashed my leg in the same spot it did back then.

No pictures here. I'd be embarrassed. This one is a quickie for the oil company and the customer has no money. Bare bones, original mid-tapped header, reuse as much old stuff as possible. We normally do not do this kind of work, but we are the only contractor working for this oil compamy that can file in this locality.

Yes, purists, SHAME on me. But Autumn is almost upon us, and the Season is about to begin. And I am NOT about to give stuff away.

Ron, Your work sets the bar for neatness and speed. Thanks for putting up the pics.

    Awsome

Hey no fair bleeding on the paint..come on now..what a way to get the customer to pity you!! :) nice job per the norm. Make sure to get that hand checked over, I learned the hard way how fast they can scar. Have a 3" scar on my forarm because I was to stubborn to get it stitched..Bet that customer has many good years of service from that system!!
  • Just changed the bandage

It's healing up real nice . Still haven't felt any pain , not sure if that's a good or bad thing ? I still got the mentality ingrained in from working with my last company - a little hand cleaner and some fresh teflon tape wrapped around the cut and you're good to go . Thanks Lchmb .
  • Don't feel bad Al

I've got hundreds of JOT and ECT steamers out there not piped to specs . It took me a while to start following instructions , and more important - why they have to be piped exactly as they're shown .

The V8 series is excellent for steam , I'll bet you'll have no problems with the install . Thanks for the kind words Al .

    Hey Ron,

    what are knots?
  • Garlic knots

Is that just a New York thing ?

    must be

You folks do live in your own world over there!! Is a garlic knot like twisted bread or sweet bread or something? I love garlic so now I'm curious..:)
  • Alls it is

is small pieces of pizza dough rolled or soaked in garlic and other spices , then baked . The more the garlic soaks in , the better the taste . My mouth is watering now .

Tell me you don't have zeppoles out there too ?

  • Hey Ron,

You're right, no Sicilian pizza, either.

Believe it or not, the Italian food was one of the reasons in the plus column when I moved here from NH.

I didn't realize how much I'd miss fresh-off-the-boat seafood, like the Weathervane or Newick's makes.

And hot dogs. Boy, would I like a Schondland's dog with mustard and relish on it, right about now. With NH cole slaw.

And STEAK!!! BOY, do I miss being able to buy a steak that you can actually put your teeth into, right from the regular grocery store, for $4.99 a pound.

Farm stands aren't quite the same, on Long Island, either.

Pickles! Boy, are there different definitions of THAT word!

I miss the ol' homemade kerosene cucumbers.

When we eat corn on Long Island, we have no idea who grew it. Imagine that!!!

    yup

if a bunch of tough LI types went into a Pizza place around here, they would end up beating the crap out of the owner! Actually, I had some industry friends here from LI many years ago. We went to an Italian place here and I was embarrassed in the end. They wouldn't even eat their stuff........hey, what am I doing here, anyway??

  • Hey Clammy

how you been doing ? I wish I could forget the bad ones but thats hard to do . One time the homeowner was literally screaming at us for not lifting the boiler on blocks ( after were were done and after he was down there at least 10 times watching us work ) . Never mind it wasn't in the contract or the fact that the previous 2 boilers were on the floor . Thank you very much for the kind words .
  • Zeppoles

small pieces of pizza dough , deep fried in oil then covered with powdered sugar . Now you got my mouth watering again .

    thanks

Thanks bill for the complament but i think ron works a little more under the gun then i .Working for company can be hard and alot are very restrictive on what gets done and what's a priority on a replacement job .And for any one in that sitution it's hard to produce quality like his everyday day in and day out ron is lucky that he has some good mechinics working with him and i very much doubt there's any dead wood in that crew or any body slacking .Me i usually work alone and i start early and arrive home later but i do love what i do enjoy the feeling of leaving a job as mint as i can and knowing the custermer has gotten more then what they paid for in quality and workmanship thank you again for your kind words ,but i always bow my hat to ron and his crew cause i know i was there replacing boilers for the mostly unthankful masses and it didn't seem as much fun then as ron makes it out to be now .Thanks again and peace clammy

  • The noise level

is considerably higher with the Riello . It has that extra "whizzing" noise you don't get with a Beckett . We buy our unpackaged red Riello burners in bulk right from Canada , but the blue Burham Riellos we get from the supply house . We install a mix of Beckett and Riello and they both perform fine in the V8s . Riello availability on Long island is just as good as Beckett nowadays , and both are within dollars of each other . Where are you located ? Thanks alot Mike .
  • I agree totally

    Just goes to show...

... whether Ron Jr. gets a lot of space, a little space, or no space, the installs always look and perform great. Given the concern of the HO for your safety and general level of interest, I am surpised that the HO did not opt for an indirect...

Anyway, I hope your hand is healed by now, and congratulations on yet another beautiful install. The ballet you guys do to get all of this done in a day or less must be impressive indeed (and inspirational for other service business owners!). Cheers!

    Under the gun

Yup, Ron is the master of the one day replacement. If he worked for me I would probably put him to sleep! "Oh, Ron, just get it done whenever" Plus, we don't have 7-11's, Zepploles or knots here.
