Yes use the same size tank . To set the Fill-trol pressure , pump up the tank blader to the desired system pressure .

    expansion tank trouble

Over the weekend I discovered the expansion tank on my hot water heating system was full of water. The system has been idle since May but worked last season. I removed the expansion tank and drained the water out of it. I tried to add some air but can't get any into the schrader valve on the expansion tank. Is there any difference between expansion tanks besides capacity? The label on this one says "amtrol fill-trol system". As far as I know, the auto-fill feature of this system has never been used...there is a gate valve on the water supply (house is on a well) for adding water if needed. Would it be alright to replace the fill-trol tank with a similar sized extrol tank?

Thanks for any insight you're able to provide.

    Fill-Trol

It's been a long time since I serviced one of these and I never did like them. I think Ed is mistaken. With a regular X-trol tank you don't have the fill gate stem and pressure plate.

If you use a regular exp. tank, you lose the ability to auto-fill to the correct pressure. If you add a regular tank, you must also add a pressure reducing valve (feeder) to the fill line. No matter where the water comes from (well, city, etc). You must also have an approved backflow preventer in many localities, not just a chack valve, before the boiler feed device.
