munchkin chimney venting

1) I don't believe that there is a flexilble PVC that meets the appropriate standards for venting an appliance available in the US. Be careful.
2) You can use the chimney as a concentric vent- run the exhaust pvc from the appliance and up the chimney, terminating 12 inches above the top of the chimney. Connect the intake air from the boiler to the base of the chimney, with a relatively tight seal (make sure that the chimney is relatively clean).
This arrangement uses the inside of the chimney as a concentric vent. This will work for multiple boilers as well, providing that there is ample free air space within the flue for each boiler.

Munchkin chimney venting
Utilizing the concentric piping (pipe-in-pipe) can the chimney be used? I have clearance issues with windows. All thoughts appreciated. Thanks.0 -
I often
use existing masonry chimneys as a chase to run PVC pipe to vent my munchkins. I use riser clamps at the top. It's all a matter of having enough room to run the pipes. WW

An additional thought
On other equipment I install that is Cat 4 condensing equipment, if a 2 pipe set up is used, instead of a one pipe, the required distance from a window shrinks down to 1 foot, rather than 4 feet as prescribed for one pipe and by the Munchkin install manual. The reason given to me was, if you are bringing in air to the appliance directly with a pipe, you will not be creating a negative pressure in the house that could, when the appliance is running, draw flu gases into a window. (as if the window would be open when the heat is on...sheesh!) I often have problems finding wall space 4 feet away from windows and have wondered if Munchkin is just being extra ( and maybe unecessarily) safe or what. WW

We do it that way...
All the time as well.
Matter of fact, we found chimneys with offsets work well with "flexible" PVC tubing as well!

munchkin venting
Guy
Is using the existing chimney as you described written in any of the manuals for the Munchkin? Seems like a good way to vent these heaters.0 -

Each and every time this is done, you must submit a drawing with accurate measurements. You must also submit the name, address, model and serial number of the boiler. This is the only way you will get factory approval for this type of venting. It is not shown or described in any of our published literature. This is not the ideal situation, and should only be used when all other vent options are excluded.
Also Wayne, there are several reason we wish to have you 4 feet from a window, other exhaust, or other building air intake. Around CO is there ever such a thing as "too safe"? Don't forget the drawings in our book are two dimensional, the world is three dimensional.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for
your input, Guy and Chuck. I like the chimney co=axial idea. I have a job where I might have to use it. No wall space that's window free for the 4 foot limit and the chimney is not big enough for 2 3 inch PVC vents. If I get the job I'll let you know. Chuck, I know what you mean about not being too careful for CO, but sometimes finding the 4 feet is hard. (and all the other guys let me do it. c'mon pleeez) WW
