Thick Floor Staple up Retrofit

I have a 2-1/4" thick existing floor in a room with a 19' cathedral cieling and still have to install the finished floor! Heat calc NG on staple up. Maybe going to use quik-trac since alraedy have some hydro-air. Room always "feels" cold and is very well insulated. Anyone use quik-trac with laminate flooring??

    Thick Floor Staple up Retrofit

Working on heat calcs this week. However, I have an older home with 3/4 " X 8" subfloor laid at 45 degrees and 3/4" narrow oak flooring on top of that. This gives me a total of 1 1/2 inches of wood? Is this an issue? Worst case....I would like to staple up plates so that number of panel rads could be reduced. Does this make sense?

    thick floor

That's pretty much standard construction technique here in northern New England and we have "radiated" many a floor like that. I have found that extruded aluminum plates give excellent heat transfer without using extreme temps. Do the math and the heat calc properly and you should be OK assuming you have enough floor space to "load up" the BTU"S

    As Al suggested

the only way to answer that question would be a heat loss calc and design. This will tell you the BTU/hr load of each room and the supply temperatures needed to get you there on a design (worst case) day. Most programs spit out a warning if the floor, alone, cannot meet the heating load.

I would be sure to look below that floor before you bid. Most often those older diagonal plank jobs have a boatload of hard wood nails, or cleats, sticking out the bottom. this makes a transfer plate job, a REAL job!

Look before you leap, both with the design and installation method :)

    True Dat.

If there are a lot of nails. add a lot of time with a grinder into the bid. It may be easier to just cover the top of the floor with a product like quik trak or just do floor warming with staple up and then do your actual heating with panel rads. Gawd I hate them nails!!! WW
