wonder why so great of price differance did both companies measure the connected load or was this a case of kind of looks like this model will work? are you trying to get a free boiler from gas company? will it heat your house? what extras did you want? auto water fill? indirect? now main vents? boiler moved? nothing is free

2 Pipe steam
After reading this site for awhile, I think that I am ready to replace my 100plus year old boiler in a 2 pipe steam system. Of course, everyone I have talked to says they know how to do it, but I get pretty contradictory responses from people as to what is going on, what is needed, etc. I spoke to someone from this site...he seemed pretty knowledgeable, but his prices were literally twice what Trethewey Bros (from this old house, and around here known to be the most expensive shop in town) quoted me.
Can anyone recommend someone in the Boston area. I'm not adverse to paying for quality, and what I am looking for is superb workmanship, but don't necessarily want to pay something that is out of line.
One other question. I have read some of Dan's stuff and the schematic for the two pipe steam system doesn't seem to match what I have. My dry return seems to go directly to a Fand T trap which has a vent coming off it, and then directly down into the wet return. In the books I've looked at, the F and T trap is between the main and the return. Please explain.

Dennis, you NEED a STEAM specialist in there, Pal
And, you got a few up there AND they frequent this site and have ads here. I'll give you 4 off the bat: Milne P & H. Paul Lessard, Ed Wallace, Gary Wallace. I'm not sure how close they all are thats why I threw all of em at ya...but these are the peolpe you want to be talking to. YES! The really good steam guys WILL be more "expensive" on the install , but it will be doen right NOW, whcih will save you boatloads later. Good Luck. Mad Dog

You have a Vapor system
What you have is not an F&T trap. It's a "Float Trap/Air Eliminator" which has the job of letting air out of the dry return, and closing the vent opening if water rises into it. It's essentially a glorified main vent except that it doesn't close if steam reaches it. See chapter 15 of "The Lost Art of Steam Heating" for an in-depth discussion of this type of system.
Have you found a manufacturer's name on your FT/AE?
And I'll second Mad Dog's recommendations.
