We'll check again and call Honeywell if we have to

    Problem

With the advice of Bill & others, we replaced a bad Sparco zone valve like in the picture below. She calls today and says the boiler is hot even though all 3 stats are off. Sure enough, 2 of the 3 end switches, 1 old and our new one, are closed even though there is no call for heat and the zone valves are closed. Any guesses? Need to replace both? Thanks!

    A couple things...

Is this connected to a 40VA transformer? A 40va should be able to operate 8 of these valves. These have a rack/pinion drive, so the valve sticking is unlikely. Are the end switch contacts welded from too much or too little voltage? How is the system wired? Usually the t stat calls for heat, the valve drives open, and the end switch makes whatever circuit they are in. With the valve closed, the end switch should be open. You also can call 401 738 4290 and hit option #7 for tech support.

John, are the heads screwed on to line up the dots with the pointer, those heads can be funky if not lined up just right.Dave

    What Dave said...

and sometimes you have to use an ohm meter to set them in "neutral", otherwise they stay in gear...

Read the instructions real close. It's not as simple as you'd think it is.

    Yes & no

I sent him out with a printout of this thread. Got the issue of the tail switches solved but noticed that the relay chatters briefly as the tail switches of the 2 older zone valves open & close. Naturally the HO says we caused it. He called the number but the operator knew little. Told him his 40va transformer was undersized among other things. So now we have to figure out why the brief chatter is happening. At least she has heat. We went from 90 yesterday to 50 this morning :(
