heating
First thing to do before installing heating equitment is to find out what is needed .In heating we produce for what is lost through the ceilings, windows, doors, walls and floors .The outer area of the structure exposed to unconditioned space.Heat goes to cold which is our loss...A heat loss calulation needs to be done to determine the btu we need produce ,to replace the btu loss during the coldest day of the year in the structures enviorment. Measurement of the structure ,ceiling, window, ect is needed to perform one.
There are free programs around ,but I reccommend doing them by hand first . You will pick up a lot more.
Back to your set up .....I would take in count the house furnace and how and when your running the woodburner. You may not need a full size unit. Me the coldest day of the year if I ever get home I would only want to raise the thermostat. Not chop wood .
ps You need to use the net btu rating in your figuring. The gross btu rating is the fuel going in -minus the loss up the chimney is the net btu rating....
The 2nd question ... I would look into dampers controlled by temperature....0
