Gasfolk <a href="http://forums.invision.net/Thread.cfm?CFApp=2&&Message_ID=158781&_#Message158781">unearthed and presented to us a rather interesting piece of research by Henry Manczyk in Rochester</a>. The <a href="http://www.energy.rochester.edu/efficiency/optimal_boiler_size.pdf">linked-to PDF</a> details the theoretical underpinnings to using multiple boilers vs. a single-stage boiler regarding seasonal vs. AFUE efficiency.
Has anyone else read the paper, and what were your impressions? Presumably, a modulating boiler will show an even better seasonal efficiency than a staged system, since it behaves like hundreds of little boilers attached to a main across the allowable firing range.
Is this the answer to the 35%-45% fuel usage decreases that mod/con consumers have been harvesting?
