Ok - now how do I remove the steam radiator vent?

I think the steam radiator vents have been screwed in for about 30 years and perhaps even sealed(painted) shut. Any good suggestion for how to unscrew it without it breaking? Should I use WD40, a wrench, something else? I'm afraid of breaking the vent trying to remove it to do troubleshooting.

    I hit it to the left with a wrench and finally got it off.
