outdoor wood boilers

which heats via fp ht ex - hi temp baseboard, dhw - and then some distance away from house - a large 3 bay garage. 3 bay is radiant - with a three way valve temp control. These folks like it warm - and the system should provide enough heat. But regardless of all the inherent faults listed by Fred and others - as long as fuel prices - interest in non traditional heating methods will increase. IMO most folks oversize the wood boiler to the extreme - which then requires some sort of heat dump - if you don't want to over pollute your neighbourhood with low temp, acrid wood smoke due to a smoldering fire.

    OUTDOOR WOOOD BOILERS

Looking for a good piping schematic involving a open outdoor wood boiler and then converting the building to a closed system witht the use of a flat plate heat exchanger. The closed system involves radiant tubing. Wondering about the best way to control the radiant side of things. Any input is greatly appreciated.

    Open Outdoor Wood Boiler

Email me and I can send you some schematics on how to run your pex into your indoor building if you like.
  • outdoor wood boiler and radiant heating

It is difficult to marry the needs of an outdoor wood boiler to the needs of your radiant floor heating system. the temperature requirements to keep the outdoor boiler happy, the temperature requirements to keep the outdoors happy, the temperature requirements of your outdoor wood boiler to keep your neighbors happy, all far exceed the requirements of any radiant floor heating system.

In its simplest form, the marriage between open and closed heating systems looks piping wise exactly like a system in which a cast iron boiler gets connected to an O2 porous radiant floor heating system. Force the open system water through one side of an appropriate heat exchanger and the closed side through the other. An automatic (read motorized) mixing valve and controller looks after the building heating needs. Remember though that the outdoor boiler is not a sophisticated heating appliance and remember to that when the heating and DHW needs have been met you cannot turn the wood fuel off as you can with a gas or oil appliance.

At best this is an unequally yoked arrangement and should be avoided.

We have discussed this topic on previous threads. Look in the archives.

    Just the ticket for you

Look at Taco's new mixing station that has built in reset or setpoint control along with a flat plate type HX. Four pipe connections, program the control and plug it in, simple as that. Saves gobs of time and works great. The HX is good for up to 50,000 BTU load.

The more standard method is to simply pipe the system as you normally would and substitute the HX in the place where the real boiler goes.
