noise in boiler

in THE MAIN WALL
when my heat kicks on my boiler makes a noise like air is trapped in it. I drained the expansion tank hoping to solve the air lock and the constant overflow occurring due to the high pressured water that with a waterlogged expansion tank had no where to go. the boiler overflow has stopped occuring but the knocking remains. It is an old boiler (1946) with a bladderless expansion tank the make is burnham and it is gas fired

    Breaking steam with high water temperature ? Broken circulator coulping ?
