Water in steam pipes

After refitting my system with new main vents and rad vents, i get a similar ticking (the rads give more of a ping). It's just expansion, and is normal. You'll probably hear it during the heating cycle, as well as when the boiler kicks off and the rads begin cooling.
Just double check your piping and rads for proper pitch. I use a 4 foot level, but a smaller one would work too.
Seems normal to me. And I agree with the above post...banging isn't good.
Cheers,
Greg

I just had my burner adjusted to fire to the appropriate load (it was very underfired) and now I get a little ticking of pipes and radiators (not sure if it qualifies as water hammer). It's not at all bothersome and I can tolerate it, especially since the system seems to be running more efficiently. I believe it relates to improper piping around the boiler and I don't want to pay to have it re-piped. Is this something I should be concerned about - can it cause damage - or if I can live with the sound is that all that matters?0 -
Anybody?
Anyone have an opinion on this? Thanks for any advice.0 -
Ticking? if this is the sound from the pipes expanding and slipping on there hangers or where they slide through flooring as they expand and contract, this is normal.
If you hear banging or boiling, this is a problem with poorly pitched or sagging pipes, and water pooling in them.
If your system is now heating properly you may be hearing the pipe expantion more because it is happening more quickly.0 -
More ticking
The system is definitely heating up more quickly. In addition to ticking in some pipes I now notice ticking in some radiators (particularly the rads that are vented quickly). Again, this is not bothersome but I want to make sure this isnt something to be concerned about. Is it a sign of "wet steam" or just the pipes/rads expanding?0
