Geoff,

Join the group and I promise you that we will make a difference. We are not here for the short term. This is a long term goal. We will be working towards it for the rest of our lives. Our kids will benefit. This is work being done for the next generation.

    Well..

The real answer isn't formulas or higher efficiency techno-fixes, it's going to require legislated change of lifestyle, which ain't gonna happen in North America. We are a land of spoiled consumers living the lie of cheap fossil fuel. The only way any degree of "whole house energy efficiency" will begin is with legislation. Create a simple energy standard like the European method: Any new building cannot consume more than 50 kwh/sq.meter/year. Period. Every builder/designer has the freedom of design and equipment, as long as they do not exceed that target. There are examples of homes in Germany that use a TOTAL of a few litres of heating oil in a YEAR. It's not hard, but North Americans are too unwilling to yield on their "lifestyle".

I respect your passion, but the realities are that you are working against a huge inertia, and it isn't just "engineers" and "scientists", it's the whole of society and government. The RPA is still a "fringe" element in the whole scheme of things, and even ASHRAE isn't really a player in whole building energy efficiency. They are a "techno-fix" group of, and for the HVAC industry, not whole building energy efficiency.

You should know EXXON made 30 Billion in the last quarter of 2005 ( PROFIT ). Thats a lot of grease john. When you
have that kind of lub you will get things done in Government.Untill then its deer in the headlights reguardless of what you have. You can walk on water ,heal the sick and raise the dead. Deer in the headlights.OH and
by the way the non for profit CEO of National fuel gas a
public utility just retired at FIVE MILLION a year.
Maybe he has some time to figure out how to reduce gas consumption.

    Applause

I think this is great stuff. Change happens slowly and incrementaly. Its not like nothing is happening. If I compare my house circa 1985 to a newer house circa 1995 I use double the fuel and there is precious little I can do about it without spending tens of thousands of dollars. Sure, the current codes dont go far enough and the inspectors let all kinds of horrors slip by but when I see 400 foot long driveways with steam coming off them on my way into work I feel good about that five dollar packet of weatherstripping I just put on my side attic door.

    I understand , but...

It will take some effort, I'm sure. Me, I'll do my part by designing low energy buildings and educating young (and old) minds whenever I can. Having actual operating buildings using passive, low tech thermal mass radiant systems is my bag and so far so good. Grass roots- show people this stuff works, it's not black magic, and it CAN be done. The key is passing on the knowledge to everyone so it can be disseminated and not locked up like secret formulas.
