The main reason some people convert from steam

an indirect tank skulking around behind the boiler too?

Comments

  • It's for headspace

We replaced this old beast a few days ago . Plenty of help for this one and we needed if . This unfinished part was in the middle of a finished basement with white walls and brand new beige carpet . Anyone whos ripped out a steamer knows theres no easy way to control the leftover spooge and loose chamber dust without erecting a bonafide asbestos tent . We put down drop cloths , paper and speedy dry ... and hope for the best .
  • The dreaded main pipe

The height was just perfect where it wasn't in your line of sight while walking . Kenny knocked into it good and hard at least 10 times . Tony got knocked to the floor like a boxers bad day . After seeing what happened to those 2 , I made sure I walked with a hunch .
  • Burnham V84

We dropped the header and increased the boiler main to 3 inch . The homeowner was shocked that the new boiler was so small . He didn't believe me when I told him they come in smaller sizes than this .

Nice job Ron Jr, I know just what you mean about the left over gooo from the old boilers, always a challange to find a better way to keep it clean. You just gotta love theose low pipes , man i still have indentation in my scull from jobs gone by......David
  • The Taco relay

is used to run the burner . No T-T contacts on the primary control .
  • Kenny knows

intimately about low pipes . He hit his head so hard a few days before this job he was almost chucking in a sink . One time in the city he managed to take out every light bulb in the basement . What goes through an architect or a builders mind when they specify a 6 or 6.5 foot basement ? Hey , thanks David for the compliment .

    Relay

Does it come with the Burnham? Or do have to purchase it separate?

    Isn't this a steam-steam changeout?

I presume this a straight steam changeout??

    Headspace makes for empty heads

You know, according to fashion gurus, beige is no longer the in color for home design. I'm crossing my fingers for rusty brown red to make the cut.

Wear your steam boiler crud to make a fashion statement.

Thanks for the very nice steam to steam conversion picture.

  • Ron

Just curious. When you get these boilers delivered, I would assume you are getting them knocked down, but are you getting a controls carton or are the LWCO and other electrical entities sent seperately? Normally, the packaged boilers and boilers sent out with the Burnham controls package will come with premade harnesses as well as a 4" box mounted R8235 relay like you see in the picture below. Some of our distributors use off the shelf controls in lieu of stocking our team controls carton. As usual....a real nice job Ron!

I love that old boiler install...

... I wonder who was inspired to put the oil burner on the side of the boiler that faces a chimney. Either the installer hated the maintenance folk, or this is some sort of conversion that makes sense to anyone but this homeowner. This burner arrangement must have made service/diagnosis that much interesting.

Like the system in the place I used to rent, it looks this steamer had no Hartford loop... my back hurts just looking at those sections! The good news is, we know what's about to happen... a drop-header install. Yay!
  • Yep , this was steam to steam

I didn't say we did a conversion , the low head height is the main reason people consider switching to forced water .
  • Oh , it was a pain

in the butt just disconnecting the burner . Service was definitely dicey . Some of these even had the burner area covered by an extended jacket and top . Now those were a real challenge . Thanks lot Constantin .
  • We purchase everything

separate , even the boiler is knockdown . I do believe Riello makes a primary with T-T , but that's just another part for the service guys to carry on full trucks already . It's easier to use the Taco relay for this setup .
  • Glenn

We're getting the boilers knockdown . In separate cartons are the jacket , burner , canopy and trim . The trim has the relief valve , gauge , glass and assorted nips and bushings , and the pigtail . We supply everything else separately . The blue junction box comes with the canopy , but I've never seen that relay .

Hey , thanks Glenn , hope you're feeling better . It's hard to keep a good man down .
  • A little deceiving

With the heater to the right , the chimney , the wall in front , and a washer + dryer where I was standing for the pics , we were all over each other like brokeback boilermen . Thanks Boilerpro .
  • Beige

You would not believe how many jobs we walk in on where the homeowner just had new , light colored carpet installed . All the way to the boiler room door , and sometimes all the way to the boiler . Thanks Christian .
  • Thanks Ron!

There is another carton that can be obtained which will come with the BX harnesses, the relay and 4" box, Hydrolevel LWCO and Pressuretrol. Your supplier may not stock the control cartons, but they can obtain them. Just thought you ought to know.

It's probably an oil fired water heater.

In the original pic, you can see a little bit of a flue pipe just under the flue for the boiler. Also, there is a yellow Energy Guide sticker on it.

In the after pic, I think you can see the flue pipe just under the horizontal run of the boiler's flue pipe.

Ron Jr. can clue us in for sure though.
