How much baseboard needed?

Hello, I recently replaced a cast iron radiator with two 7ft slant/fin cast iron baseboard elements(space constraints). The question I have is, is this enough heat? The room is 11x16 with and open stair case(door at top of the stairs) and the enterance to the hallway off the room. It seems to be a bit cold in the room. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Anthony

    It would depend

on the heat loss of the space. Click on Free Heat Loss Calcs on the navigation bar and get Slant/Fin's free Hydronic Explorer software to check your work.

Is the room on it's own zone?

Meaning independent call of the boiler to heat that space regardless of the other spaces?

If the rest of the house has cast iron radiation and there is only one zone (in a cast iron heated portion of the house) the baseboard fin-tube zone will feel colder when the rest of the house is satisfied. The low mass cools off and the heat output drops off almost immediately. At the same time the cast iron pulses out heat for a while.

As Dan says, also check the heat loss. But if you mix fin-tube into a "cast iron zone" it almost does not matter how much radiation you have.

  • Thanks for the quick response gentlemen.

Yes, all the radiators are on one zone. I'll chk the calculator to see if I have enough baseboard. But I think what your saying is probably the case. The slant/fins just don't hold the heat as long as the cast iron rads do.

    Thanks again,

    Anthony

    Nothing against

Slant Fin of course :) any baseboard or radiation of lower mass will perform differently than cast iron.

Solution is to place it on it's own zone (valve or circulator with boiler-call priority).
