hot water boiler

what would make an indirect water heater as a separate zone off a boiler more efficient than a themostatically controlled storage tank with circulator fed by the tankless coil? this would assume that both tanks are insulated to the same "R" value and hold the same ammount of water

    hot water boiler

I have a hot water boiler with a coil in a 3 family house .The heating is fine, but the domestic water goes cold when we run the tub.

    Most coils

are not rated to keep up with the output of a tub faucet, either have a pro install a flow restricting device or turn the tub valve to where it stays hot.

    An indirect or booster tank

might be a good investment. Having 40-60 gals of pre-heated water should solve your problem.

    I second the indirect tank

... though I would run it as a separate heating zone instead of off the coil. That way, you usually get better heat transfer and efficiency.

    Anti scald devise installed?

cold side expansion ST-12? using a recirculating pumped or gravity trough a water heater as a "Storage tank" ?

The tanks have the same efficency

But I don't think you could cold start a boiler with a coil. I also don't want to bother with an expensive bronze pump. An old coil might be limed up already and not have the greatest heat transfer capacity anymore.
