Why would someone install long horizontal pipe for air vent
I recently found 2 basement radiators with 15' of horizontal piping with air vents at the ends. After radiators heat the horizontals water hammer. I wanted to remove these runs and install new vents. Its a 1-pipe steam system with wet return Par flow. What seems to be happening here is the extended pipes are acting like radiators and because they are not pitched they hammer. I can figure out why someone would put these in. The radiators are close to wood paneling if that helps.0 -

Do you mean vertical?
Since the steam rads were on the same level as the boiler, I would thing they wanted to raise the air vents above the rads to make sure they fully filled with steam.0
