Crown with Beckett?

any oil monkey can adjust a Beckett on Weil Mclain and have half a chance at getting it to run clean --i have seen a lot of Crowns soot-up and hesitate from people who don't know how to adjust, use instruments, and test with different nozzles --most of the 1's i encountered should've had a w nozzle but this was replaced by the guy who has a different nozzle -thinking an ss nozzle is close enough or the hollow is the same -- or the guy who--saysits not the correct size but i'll bump up the oil pump pressure and it will have the same output--and not record the pressure change

Crown with Beckett?
Is this a good combo? First of all thanks to everybody here- I have learned a lot. I just agreed to have my heating contractor put in a 80,000 BTU Crown Tobago with a Beckett burner. I heard that the WM boilers like to clog up. That's why I paid a little more for the Crown. Any words of wisdom on this setup?? Thanks, Jason.0 -
these days
no boiler likes to clog up, it is the result of mekanics who cannot adjust a fire properly to save their lives working on quality equipment.
To me there are technicians and there are Mek-a-nics
Ols school guys like to set up their burners to create soot, some don't even use a smoke tester, they learned on the old stuff and have it stuck in their heads that oil burners run smoky, there is no reason to have other than a 0 smoke on a Carlin, Beckett or Riello burner since 1980. None of them like to soot up. It is 2006.
The reasons a unit may soot up if it is adjusted right are dirt in the air intake or fan, problems with the fuel system,{too small oil filter, contaminated tank etc}, and lack of combustion air.
Weil McLain makes a great boiler in my opinion and if properly set up and maintained will not give any trouble. Same goes for the Crown.
In comparison of construction I see little difference between the WM and Tobago, the passageways seem identical, but I would be interested in anyone elses opinion.0 -
Crown
Crown is a good boiler. I've worked on them with Becketts, and Waynes (Blue Angel). The most important thing, I've found, is to use the specified nozzle and pump pressure. And use instruments. I also have seen a fair amount with Carlins, but I don't think that is a specified burner. With those, a 60 solid or semi-solid works best.0 -
Excellent post!
Are all nozzles equal?? NO!!
Question.....What is the reasoning behind changing a nozzle EVERY time the burner is serviced? What if it was working just fine? Why change it?
Try this if you have time. Get 5 nozzels that are, according to the rating, exactly the same. Install each and test. Any difference? Should there be? If there is, why?
Gawd I love this stuff!

a lot has changed
the junk burners are gone, Beckett, Carlin, Riello all run good and should be easy to get 0 smoke- follow the instructions.
Remember when every company thought they could have their own burner??? American Standard, Lennox, remember the Lennox belt driven POS????, the Ducane stamped steel burner that could not support the weight of the motor and would take out couplings??? those were the days
I've heard guys say "a nozzle is a nozzle" yeah right, the tolerances are usually +- 5% but can be more.
Another thing to check is what it says on the nozzle not the container, ever spill your nozzles and then mix them up???
Also many if not most nozzle adapters are over tightened and no longer seal, minute squirts of oil coming out the wrong way can make it tough to get a clean fire, when really bad you know cuz the home shakes like a freight train.
p.s. I am looking for a Branford burner to restore, if you rip one out let me know, if feasible I will come and get it.0 -
Thanks!
Thanks for the replies. Gene, I don't have any brand of burner I'm ripping out. this is going to replace a Natural gas fired WM VHE series.0
