Hard Wood Floors

are reasonable. The only smell issue I have had is with staple ups running 180F! Which is a bad design to start with.. but.
Plenty of my jobs new and old are installed with asphalt impregnated felt paper. For some reason the old timers still prefer felt to the red rosin. Maybe it's a price issue :)
Radiant should be designed with the lowest supply temperature possible. Rarely do you want to exceed 140 which is the maxium the subfloor manufactures are comfortable with.

I have a GC who wants to put black felt on the subfloor under the wood flooring. I have always heard that it will create a bad smell. Is the smell that bad?0 -
Both contractors and homeowners have reported here about the smell in some systems. They usually say it's unpleasant but does eventually go away. If and how much it occurs [appears] to have mainly to do with method of heat transfer and required floor temperatures.
To avoid the possibility, I'd suggest using building paper (Red Rosin is an old trade name and still very widely available) instead of "tar paper".0 -
Black felt vs. Rosin Paper
I don't think the smell should be an issue, although it may be more of a problem with prefinished HW vs. finished in place flooring.
Why isn't he using rosin paper? Usually the point of the paper is to avoid wood to wood contact, which is the source of squeaks. If he's trying to install a vapor barrier, the felt might make sense.
If the flooring is prefinished, make sure the paper doesn't overlap - even with rosin paper, which is much thinner than roofing felt, overlapped layers cause a noticeable height difference...)
