Buderus boiler randomly not firing?

Vent damper sounds like the issue. As stated in above post, lock the rocker switch on the vent damper to the "manual" position. Have a technician check that the flue pipe is line up correctly, check that none of the "fingers" on the vent damper are rubbing before replacing the damper.

Buderus boiler randomly not firing?
I have a Buderus G124X boiler with a logamatic control and a buderus storage tank. I have 3 zones, one for the domestic hot water, one for the 1st floor and one for the 2nd floor. I only have one zone control that is for the second floor. the boiler is vented through the chimminey which is clay lined and is the only thing the chimmney is used for.
The boiler on random days doesn't seem to fire when called by the thermostats. I have been trying to keep an eye on the days that it doesn't fire and the weather is all over the board from dry no wind to very little wind to wet with wind. It also appears that it happens when the thermostats call for heat in the afternoon just before the kids come home from school.
When the boiler doesn't fire I just go down and turn the power swith on the logamatic control off and then on and the boiler resumes working.
I can't seem to figure out what the problem might be. Could it be a bad gas valve? I do know the the electronic pilot appears to be working. Any thoughts on what might be causing the random shut down would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Check the vent damper
Just installed a 124, and the vent damper would not always open enough to make contact. It just happened to do it while I was there. That Never Happens!
There is a switch on the side of the damper, that when it is open, you can flick to keep it open until you get a new one.

zone?
Weird, you say you only have a zone control for the second floor? How is the first floor and indirect controlled? Straight from the Logomatic? Is zone one controlled by the Logomatic constant circ? Maybe the zone for the second floor doesnt demand the boiler but instead just turn the circ on and off.
"It also appears that it happens when the thermostats call for heat in the afternoon just before the kids come home from school."
Here's a stretch but maybe its going into night mode very early and shutting a constant circ down.
But Leo and Joe probably got it right, vent damper.

Thanks for the advice guys. The only problem is is that I don't have a vent damper on the flue. The next step I was thinking about taking was to add another Zone relay (which I just purchased today) for the other zone of heat to see if that might be the problem.

With a R2107 control a call for heat does not automaticely fire the boiler. The R2107 fires the boiler based on the outdoor temperature. If this is a new system, please contact the contractor and have them contact us if there are any questions. If another relay is being added it has to be wired so the R2107 can control it for warm weather shut down, domestic hot water production and most important "pump" logic. If a technician has any questions please have them contact us.0 -
Vent damper +
It could be something a simple as an ignition failure also. Perhaps the control is calling for heat and the pilot is failing to light up. If your LogamatiK is the 2107 version, it should give you an error message on the diplay.0 -
My logamatic control is an HS2109 and it doesn't have a display to inform me of any errors. Is it possible that either the electronic pilot is failing to light or maybe the gas is not getting to the pilot and it is locking itself out?0 -
Check the ground
Check that all ground wires are hooked up and tight, check that the ground from panel to equipment is good all the way through. Tim0 -
could it be the aquastat? L8148's seem dodgy.
Well, this is a a stab in the dark based only on my experience with my own g124x.
The Aquastats (honeywell L8148E) on these seem to be lemons. I have had three fail on mine in just over a year. Two have been on my dime (at over 200 bucks!) so I'm not very fond of them!
I was told by one tech who said he's seen many many of these *intermittently* fail that the problem was with the solder joints. Looking at the board with my practiced solder eye (I worked for years as an electronics tech), I think he's right. Temps inside the boiler cabinet might be sufficient to expand/contract the circuit board enough to cause glitches.
Of course your setup is much more complex than mine and I have no idea about the logmatic controls. But if you have one of these L8148's I wouldn't rule the thing out without looking at it.0 -
Flame rectification
It may be down to flame rectification. It is suggested to have a technician check and clean the pilot assembly especially if LP Gas, check gas pressure, check pilot flame for proper adjustment. When was the last annual maintenance done? If the technician should have any questions, please have them contact us at 1-800-283-3787.0 -
rock on
Ted, you have a great point. The controls stategy needs to be spelled out on this one.

I have been in contact with the rep. who sold me the boiler who has been in contact with Buderus. I am just trying to gather as much information as I can to be prepared.
We have been trying to figure this one out since last heating season but we ran into spring and the boiler wasn't being used as much.
I have only had the boiler for one heating season. I will look into have the boiler maintained but I would think that if the boiler has only been in use for one year that it wouldn't need to be serviced.
I will check the pressure of the natural gas line. The boiler has the shut down problem so sporaticly that I wouldn't think it would be a pressure problem unless there was an issue with the gas main in the street having sporatic problems. The only other appliances on the line are a stove and a dryer. I do know that the line was sized correctly because the boiler was a changed from oil to gas and the gas company came out and look at my meter and told me I had a big enough meter to handle the boiler.
Thanks for all of your help,
Brian0
