old weil-mclain gas boiler problems

I have an older 1982 weil-mclain gas boiler. When I put the system in service this year I couldn't get the lines to purge completely I would get air from the baseboard heaters then water after a few minutes the pipes would start banging and I would bleed the system again till I got water from them. This continued throughout the day finally all i was getting was steam when bleeding the system, I went to the boiler and lifted the relief valve and all I got was steam so I shut down the boiler. I opened the drain valve which is located between the boiler and the circulator and got water from there. The pressure tank is located between the circulator and the cold water supply. Any ideas on where to start to figure out what is wrong and what needs replaced.

You shouldn`t have gotten steam from those vents(or anywhere else), aside from other things right now, how much system pressure do you have?

right now the system is shut down when i got steam from the relief valve i shut everything down. I could hear the circulator running and i got air out of the pressure tank although a little water came out first so i'm thinking the tank is ok . if the zone valve isn't opening is there a way to tell.

Are u gettin any replacement water into the system after u been "purging" the sytem of air... If its a 82's installation, chance are u have the pump on the return and steel expanison tank. If there no pressure, then the prv valve may be closed or plugged, make sure the boiler is cooled down before adding watwer, better yet, get a real BOILER pro to check out the system. Where are you located?

You need a mechanic to come troubleshoot system, explain options and explain system workings to you. if you are mechanical & understand what he tells you , you might be capable to take it from that point. a little guidance can go a long way with a lot of people.
