Winter, Cracking skin on fingers...
rick in Alaska
Member Posts: 1,466
I have found that when my fingers are busted and bleeding, it is becaused I have not been drinking enough water during the day. This time of year it is very dry out and will cause some very dry skin.Pinch the skin on the back of your hand and it should spring back if you are hydrated enough.
I learned about this the hard way from my doctors. Am finally realizing how important it is to drink enough water during the day.

Every winter the skin on my fingers crack and is very painful. I don't think I am the only one with this nagging problem so I was wondering what miracle cures you gut's have tried. What works, Don't work, etc...

Skin cracks
Mike,
I get dry skin cracks every winter on my fingertips. They get sore as hell and make work miserable. I use Zim's Crack Cream and they heal right up.
You need to use it every day, even after they heal, but it works.
Good luck,

Neutrogena
I used to use the hand creme that comes in the small tubes. They came out with some sort of body lotion I use on my hands. It works MUCH better.0 -

Glycerine-based hand cream by Camille Beckman. Widely available but not through mass merchants. Not cheap but not expensive and a large (8 oz) tub will last a LONG time. "Male-oriented" and neutral scents available.
Not only does it help prevent cracking, but I'll swear I get fewer splinters when woodworking (if I remember to use it...).0 -
Glycerine-based hand cream. I use and sell such by Camille Beckman and have MANY, MANY repeat customers--with the few "male-oriented" scents selling very well. Not only does it help prevent cracking but I'll swear that it reduces splinters during woodworking and it's GREAT to use after working with cement.

I knew this would get a great response.
As most of you probably know, I cant use it while working, but more so after work before bed time. You are right that it is so painful. I can actually make you use the other hand just to screw something back on or off.:-)

Mike I have had
my hands so raw, cracked and sore that I would wear a pair of white garden gloves to bed with Bag Balm on my hands, it works if you can Bag Balm them morning and night, just rub it in good.If you get a large can it lasts years not those sample size things in drug stores.0 -
Cutting oil works for us.
Either that, or bag balm, or, if you can find it...Corn husker's lotion.

20 years outside.
Gloves, esp. around concrete and copper. I got sick of the cracks, and bleeding. I got sick of the refrences that I was a weeni, but I started to enjoy watching others in pain. Gloves, get used to them. It's not that big of a transition. After a while you can actually pick up speed handling pipe and such. Full leather, driving or close fitting ones, about 15- 18$ a pair, expect 1-2 days break-in and then expect them to last 4 weeks. Worth every penney. Or you can play with creams and delude yourself that they work.0 -
duluth no crak hand creme and clear shield lotion used both they work but you must use it every day.0 -
All of you Maine-iacs
have a lead onto this Bag Balm. I am going to look into it. As the grandson of a dairy farmer, I owe it to myself.
In the meantime, my standby has been Vaseline. Useful for sex too- put it on the outside of the bedroom doorknob. Keeps the kids out0 -
AND avoid harsh hand cleaners
Good advice on hand goops, which I also use, but I think that it also makes sense to avoid using strong hand cleaners, if possible.
My favorite hand cleaners are corn oil (in a squirt bottle) and udder balm. Apply as needed, rub around, and wipe off with paper towels. Done.
This is especially good DURING the work day, if you need to clean your hand intermittently. At least don't de-oil your hands during the day; maybe at quitting time, the real Go-Jo.0 -
You asked!
Have you tried "Butt Cream"?0 -
Brad there must be a Dairy Farm near you somewhere
Try drug stores and farm supply stores we have Agaway up here.
Its always in my house and my dads house and was in his pappys house too.It comes in a green square can, a bit thidker than Vasoline so the kids might stick to the door knob until friction warms it up.0 -
I prefer "well rounded"
Seriously though--have been selling and using (when I remember) Camille Beckman for years. Developed by an Idaho hard-working rancher's wife for her husband, ranch hands, friends and herself.
Ask your wife to get you some in "Oriental Spice".0 -
By which time
it is too late, Bruce.
But thanks! I will check out Agway. But around here you have to elbow out farmer wannabees pulling up in SUV's. Sad really.0 -
Ditto
Ditto on the gloves...... wear 'em
Ditto on the harsh hand cleaners, don't use 'em.
Ditto on the moisturizer creams
My daughter gave me a jar of stuff that her kids' doctor cooked up for diaper rash. He calls it "Magic Butt Cream"
I have no idea what's in it but it works great0 -
Real lumber yards sell Bag Balm here in Swampeast MO.0 -

bag balm
use it for any and every skin issue0 -
Back in my safety equipment days...
a company called Marion Health & Safety sold a line of hand protection products that were truly amazing. They had "Protective Glove", a barrier cream you rubbed into your hands, that shed paint, grease, oil and adhesives like a duck sheds water, and yet wasn't greasy, powdery or oily. It washed off with their hand cleaner, which also was formulated not to de-lipidize your skin, which is what causes cracking in the first place, and if you followed up with their hand cream, it was the best hand protection this side of gloves that I have ever found. It may be marketed under another name now, try your local safety equipment distributor, or the Direct Safety catalog.0 -
But all
the cows are mooing about the cold hands in our winters.0 -
remedy's
A & D Ointment, similar to Vaseline but with two helpfull minerals A & D, works like a charm, At your local pharmacy. If really chapped, I run my hands under warm water, then work in A&D, before going to bed, wake up like normal0 -
Corn Husker's Lotion
I'll second the Corn Husker's Lotion. Although, it does have a pretty strong scent in my opinion.0 -
The Hoof Maker
It used to be in Wallyworld in the animal care section.
Now my wife has to order it for me online.
I think it's a Farnam product.
All others I've tried LIE and say they're not greasy.
This one dries in a minute and is NOT greasy.
Does wonders for your skin. I think it was started for horse hooves and finally got approved for human use, but the people who put it on horses with their bare hands already caught on and were using it for years. Kevin0 -
Gloves.
Gloves. Copper and concrete are natural cell wall destroyers, this means copper dust, filings and just plain handling copper will result in those skin cells closed to the surface DIE. This is the primary reason your skin cracks. Deluding yourselves that mosture is/isn't the cause, well you all sound like Avon saleswomen. Copper is what is used as one of the primary components in weed killer, copper is what roofing manufacturers use in their alge resistant shingles, copper is added to most pressure treated lumber, need I go on....0 -
Then I shouldn't have any problems with my hands.
I work much more in the office any more. And always where gloves when working with copper. Don't work with concrete. Yet my hands get dry and crack in the winter as well.0
