The furnace could not be converted it had to be junked. On tthe boilers you needed to remove a steel plate in the fire box also when converting them. I hated them things

Blue Ray?
Anyone know of a Blue Ray, it is a boiler not a fish. I have been told, anyone?

Thanks
I was talking to my buddy about his house when he said that he has a Blue Ray and that they had a reputation. He said his oil bill is really low and wanted to know if what he heard was true. I have never heard of a Blue Ray so
Thank you very much for the link

I used to work on these alot. I didn't read through the whole link, so forgive me if I'm repeating what they said. THe big problem was heat coming back on the nozzle and affecting them. If you changed the nozzle every 6 months things would probably be OK.
Most of them have been altered. I sure your friends has been. If I remember correctly the blast tube was replaced to make the burner a standard Carlin. Afer that they worked fine. If his has been changed and the boiler's not leaking, great. I remember they were fairly efficient.0 -
Blue ray
I worked on these too, and when told by the factory reps that I needed to do "this... and that":(,time and time again), I decided to make the switch to the Carlin burner tube also.
Shortly thereafter, most began leaking.
We changed out quite a few for free, and my old boss was the guinea pig for the whole "test". He had one on his porch, being used as an end table until HIS failed. We installed it in the basement, and it promptly failed about 2 years later.
I'm not bashing here...but the company went under before I started working in the field...(22 years ago)The factory reps that I dealt with were just trying to cover their collective butts, and make sure the new firms that they repped would be waiting in the wings.
We filled one with cement...and it made a wonderful mooring for the old bosses boat. Hurricane Gloria swept through, and the boat held steady while others ended up on the causway. Maybe that will help you decide?
Plan on a good replacement and save yourself the dough upfront. JMHO Chris0 -
Jeez
That must have been an ugly scene filling a boiler with cement, I have a hard enough time with water!!

Blue Ray
I think Blue Ray got bought out by Thermodynaics and redisigned the boiler and kept selling under that name and others and so he may have a newer model that is not included in those ealier models that were recalled but best to check it out.0 -
They also made a BlueRay furnace. The oil company I used to work for sold them. I worked in a different branch of that company in another city and we refused to sell them. I replaced the one(boiler) that had been installed in the owners house!
The furnace was about as substantial as a filing cabnet as I recall.

I

My first experience
with Blue Rays was in the early 80's when I worked for an oil co in VT. The hot water boilers caused massive condensation in the chimneys. One built up an ice block at the top of the liner, which unfortunately was about a foot higher than the chimney itself. Another brought a river of black water down into the basement. The furnaces didn't seem to have that problem but the fan speed was high and raised a lot of complaints about noise and air velocity. Unfortunately the guy bought a load of them at one time and we installed them until they were all gone, then no more.0
