Boiler Shuts Off Regularly

For the last month our one pipe steam system has been shutting off several times a week. Unfortunately, I don't have many details on the age and make of the boiler but the shutdowns usually occur in the morning depriving the building of heat and hot water.

Several maintenance companies have checked out the boiler and have not seen anything obviously wrong yet it cuts off anyway. The super has the idea of wedging a piece of cardboard to prevent it from shutting off- an idea that seems a bit lacking to me.

I have only lived in the building for a year but apparently the boiler had its temperature gauge replaced last year after a similar problem.

FWIW the boiler supplies heat to 16 units. The building is pre-war but was renovated 20 years ago so I suspect that the boiler dates to the 1980's.
