Has anyone used one of these? Does it work with or take the place of ODR?

Thanks,

Tim

    its a shaver...

shaves the ups and downs out a bit:) and that results in some fuel savings and less mood swings in a system...

piping arrangements and hot water useage and emmitters all have a bearing on just how well it will help....

I installed one on my system at home.

Ran it for over a year and saw no significant difference in usage when degree days were figured in. I disconnected it and it hangs on the wall.

Want to buy a used one?
  • You mean this?

Never used one, haven`t even seen-one in my area,,,,yet. I think they just keep the circ running to try and eliminate any highs and lows, like Weezbo says. I don`t think I`d push-one.

    What it does

or is supposed to do is watch/sense your supply temp, on a call for the burner to run from the aquatstat it checks to see how fast the temp is dropping, if it is not dropping, you do not have a big load and it keeps the burner off.

I think it would be beneficial to a system with several small zones, where your burner is sized for the entire home, but really doesn't need to fire when just the master bedroom calls or small zone. It will keep it from short cycling. On systems that have 1-2 large zones, I'm not sure if full benefits will be seen, which may explain why some people say it doesn't work.

It has an optional sensor for h/w that installs on the domestic h/w pipe, so that when h/w is being used it senses that and turns the burner on.

I am contempating this for my home, still not sure.

I have installed 2 so far

From what I understand it will detect supply temp on a call for heat, control the burner from short cycling, and let the circulator run to use the heat already in the boiler before turning on the burner. As stated before, it is great for systems that have more than one zone and have no other electronics to control the burner from short cycling. Although not a true ODR, it will save some money when installed in the right application, not to mention wear and tear on the burner.

I know it does what they say because I had it installed on the boiler in my house for a winter, and I can hear the burner from my office. It eliminated all the short cycling, and the burner did seem to run longer and less often. Think of all the reduced sooting from eliminating short cycle startups on oil burners.....

    I

have installed a couple dozen as well as have one in my own home.It basically expands the high limit differential and it does work. Not one of the people I installed for has asked for their money back after the first year as they could if it didn't work, that has to say something.A Tekmar or other ODR control would do a lot more but at a much higher price point, for those who won't spend the money on ODR it's a reasonably priced alternative

    I installed

one one the most anal retentive customers on this earth. (counts degree days and stop watches boiler run times). And he loves it! He claims about 13% savings. For the price its worth a try. Darren

    Well

I don't know what DD days have to do with it. I have one on my system, and I haven't done any precise calculations yet, but, I've definitely noticed a reduction in delivery gallons over the past 12 months. The house seems to be more evenly comfortable. I have a standard BB, 3 zone system with ZV's. I have watched the system cycle a few times, with an L8148A control, Burnham V14 (fixed 8ºf DT), and the DT cycling extented to as much as 30º DT before firing. What more could I want?

I have seen a difference in usage.
