Hot Water Heater Options & One-Pipe Steam Boiler

Are the modifications to the boiler extensive and/or difficult to make when you are bypassing the coil? Any opinions or preferences as to the most efficient option to heat hot water with a not-so-efficient 30-40 year old boiler?

Hot Water Heater Options & One-Pipe Steam Boiler
I have a Smith-Mills boiler that also heats the hot water with a coil. Are there any viable options to bypass and deactivate the coil in the boiler by installing, say, an electric hot water heater? Apologies, as I'm sure this topic has been covered before on The Wall, but having to run the water for 20 minutes when the heating system isn't on to get hot water is a serious waste and very annoying -- not to mention the wasted oil during the summer months.0 -
options
Tons of options available from indirect water heaters to tankless point of use heaters to gas or oil fired equipment.
An electric tank may be the least expensive to install but is no way near efficient and is costly to run. contact a good heating contractor in your area. Avoid the utilities, in my opinion their number one objective is to sell fuel, not efficiency.0 -
John,
The model of the boiler would be helpful. Is this resedential or commercial?? I'm guessing commercial??
I know it's big bucks but if it is 30-40 years old you may want to plan for a future replacement. Also what is the domestic hot water load?? A single family or apartments?? You said Smith-Mills so I'm thinking 2000, 2500, 3500 etc.
Need more information.

It's residential, single-family. The plate says 110L-1100L. The boiler looks to be in fairly good shape (I'm not a pro, but it has been well-maintained). I was hoping to avoid replacement for at least for a few years.0
