Payne (Carrier) issue

This is what we work on a lot, if pilot assembly over 5 yrs old, replace it as it could be a weak or worn warp switch, also could be and pilot solenoid valve in main valve hanging and not giving full gas to pilot. Just few suggestions. Tim

So I have this cust with a Payne. (Carrier) It fires great, but the 3-wire pilot assy has a real weak pilot. The pilot adj really does nothing for the pilot. The pilot assy is perfectly clear of any obstruction. Can see through it. With the weak pilot, sometimes several times in a call for heat, the burners just die, and fan & inducer keep running, and after a second, the gas valve clicks and the burners re-fire. After a few of these, it stops re-igniting. Is the 3-wire pilot assy a MV system? Might this be a pilot assy prob or maybe GV itself? GV is a 645A-X, Payne is a 397HAW060100.

    Thanks,

    Pain?

Hi Tim,What is the gas pressure? Is the orifice the right one for Natural or L.P.?Pilot line crimped or full of spider stuff?

    NO,..Not MV

You have to not only have to clear the pilot orifice, but use a mini-pilot drill set at the proper gauge to assure it is clear, looking thru it does nothing.. Bristle on wire brush will pass in an emergency.:-) If and when you do this and your pilot flame cannot be adjusted the GV may have to be replaced. Without proper flame on that 3 wire pilot burner the switch cannot react properly. Also check you gas pressures....

Also, as a side not... If you ever run into one that is lighting off the pilot, then clicking off as it calls for main valve.. It is not the pilot. I is a bad Hold coil on the 5 wire valve. Replace valve. Your system probably has the gray ignition/lock-out module. That is why it stops trying. I never liked the gray box.
