Another Senseless CO Death

The warnings should be in scrolling messages on TV screens and alerts on radios. People are more likely to hear or see them rather than read them in a newspaper. Gotta go to where the eyes and ears are nowadays.

    St. Louis:

Two men, ages 37 and 35, died after they tried to burn coal in a cooking wok to stay warm. Fire officials found deadly levels of carbon monoxide in their home.

Why do I suspect it began with one of them saying, "I have a good idea!"?

We were very lucky here in Swampeast MO. Nothing from the storm. Hundreds of thousands still without power with the outages beginning only 30-40 miles away.

    Cooking wok

I'm trying to picture coal in a cooking wok but it is not registering.

got slammed this weekend. Generators, coal in woks, stoves, gas grills etc........ all being used to power or heat homes affected by the storm.

Happens EVERY time a big storm hits.

You would think that someone would put out URGENT notices BEFORE the storms hit listing all of the things NOT to do in the event of a power outage.

You would think that.......but you would be wrong.

AAA's captive insurance company, Keystone, recently sent its customers a flyer on the hazards of portable heaters. I'll see if we still have it.....

    Yup

We always see stories about people gearing up for coming storms. Stocking up on food, water, batteries etc....... even buying generators at the big box stores. This is the time to pound the message into peoples heads.

Here is a story I got this morning. 7 year old furnace. A man is dead, his wife and cat are recovering. 400ppm CO in the house when firemen arrived. Faulty furnace?

    but

they message may not be seen if the power is out... Unless they have a generator. Maybe over the radio??

Common sense sometime slips us. I know someone that used his gas grill to warm his sunroom during a party because it was a little cold. He eventually realized the error of his ways before anyone was injued.... And he knows better!
