Sometimes when the toilet gets flushed several seconds later we hear some banging on pipes...this doesn't happen all the time, just occasionally

Try
closing down the valve a little that feeds the toilet to fill the tank slower. It could be that your ballcock is bouncing some from the water pressure and volume.

Try
more fiber in your diet.

banging
The pipes that bang are in the basement0 -
Water hammer
In any water hammer situation you first need to check the incomming house pressure. It should be around 60 psi. Fix this first, it could be the only problem. Hope this helps.0 -
how to check
Where/how do I check this pressure?0 -
easiest to start
do what jackchips suggested, easiest solution.
you can probably get a pressure gauge that goes on an outside hose bib.
the problem could also be as easy as the basement toilet line loose and clanging on something.
but what jack suggested would work0 -
First step is to go downstairs & have somebody flush the WC so you can identify if it's a supply or waste pipe banging. If it's a waste pipe fasten it securely & test again. If you have supply line banging adjust the ballcock vlv as previously suggested. You might try closing the supply valve a bit as well. If that doesn't do it get a water hammer arrester such as a Precision Plumbing #MM-500ASCP. This will replace the supply stop & has an integral hammer arrester. (Water hammer is caused by a valve suddenly closing & abruptly stopping flow through the pipes. It can be annoying & even crack piping.)Probably will not find one in a big Box store but any plumber should be able to get one & install it for you. Don't just live with the noise, eventually whatever is moving will probably crack/leak & then you'll still have to fix it after you clean up the mess! Good luck.0 -
noise
It could be very cold water replacing warm water and the pipe expands. If its in the winter only that may be the problem. The clamps on the water pipe in the ceiling are to tight.0 -
sounds like water hammer0 -
banging pipe
all these suggestions sound correct.you can also check to see that if the angle stop at the toilet is not open all the way the water passing by the washer can cause the washer to vibrate violently and cause all kinds of banging.i have seen this problem a number of times0 -
Pressure gauge setup is easy
At hardware store or box store:
1-female hose bibb x 3/4" or 1/2" female thread adapter.
1-3/4" or 1/2" x 1/4" threaded bushing.
1-0-100 (or whatever) pressure gauge, 1/4" male thread.
That's all I've ever used.0
