You do a ONE DAY change out and you never compromise the quality of the work. Dos'nt matter how fast you have to do it, its straight and true.

We may discuss what products you use or how it was piped, But MAN, your piping is spot on.

Nice work Dude. You really are a role model for other installers.

  • This was an HB Smith

that's seen better days . This is a laundry room and someone installed the indirect between the boiler and the laundry table . To fold clothes they had to squeeze past the indirect and hope a pipe didn't hit them in a critical area . Someone had the bright idea of using the coil as a preheater . Hmm , sorta defeats the purpose of the indirect I think ?

Something I didn't pick up till it was already piped later on - NO T and P relief on the indirect !!!!! Since it was new 10 years ago !!!! I cut the pipe out and added one . I did not tell the homeowners they were lucky it didn't explode . It's safe now and that's what counts .

The 2nd pic is the flue pipe . This was one of those jobs where the ell goes on first , then you slide the boiler back as far as she'll go .........
  • We used a Burnham V83

and reused the Weil Mclain Plus 30 indirect . We tried unthreading the 1 1/4 by 3/4 adapters that went into the tank , but no such luck . We did run 1 inch pipe to the indirect for a future swap out . This one was done by me , Kenny and the new guy Mike . We managed to squeeze the indirect next to the boiler so they can use the laundry table without any suprises .

    Ron,

    Nice job bunkie !

My first FD-12 question was about my parents home. The boiler was installed in 1977, and I think it was the first for the company doing the job.

I walked into the supply house 8 years later, asking if the counter guy knew anything about the FD-12 series boiler...and without even skipping a beat, he said "other than the fact that they leak?"

Dopey me, pumped 2 cans of Base Hit into it...and it lasted another 6 years!(they used to lose the power alot!)

I replaced it in 1993 and the 68 w/m series boiler I installed is on the downslide now too.

The things we've learned in the timw aquired, eh? Chris

Nice work! I would just pray your not going back to service it next year, with a right side cleanout. We call those "skinny guy Cleanings". The main reason we all gain weight.

When I first walked into this one , I was going to leave the indirect right where it was . This was just a boiler changeout . But thinking about the tappings on the V8 , it would've taken longer to leave the tank where it was , and no easy way to service the circs . Going down the wall with the circs was Kenny's idea , gotta give him credit . Thanks alot Scott , I really appreciate your thoughts .

Thanks man . No need to be jealous - I've seen the great work you do , and your pace is faster than ours .

The side cleanout on the V8 is option as per the manual , but I hear ya about the access . I've been trying to get someone , anyone to specify top cleanout boilers for these tight fits . Seems like most of Long Island is in need of the smallest boilers possible with the area devoted to heating equipment . Thanks buddy .

We've been pluggin' away at a good clip . But nothing good to post till this one . Most of the time the exisiting pipework we don't touch is so horrid that it throws off the whole job , no matter how hard you try . This one we nipped it in the bud and cut EVERYTHING outta the way .

Thanks David . How you been doing so far this mild season ?

    Been very steady!

No slow time, thank God!I run a good balance between residentual change outs and new construction, also teamed up with a couple of other companys doing sub work installs.I had to hire a helper/apprentice, he's green but man does he remind me of me when i was very green.
Its kinda cool to watch him learn and grow.

So what are you gonna replace the 68 with ? What about that new triple pass Peerless ?

Suprisingly , this was the first time I've seen a residential HB Smith . They must've never been a hot seller out here . They're kinda heavy for such a small boiler . Just like the 68s .

Base Hit did the trick , huh ? I used 3 bottles of it when my radiant floor sprung a leak . It did the trick too ..... and coated up the coil real good . The next year I replaced the boiler and the sealant was coated all around the coil - looked like shellacked oatmeal .

    Thanks Chris .
  • Ed

Wasn't sure of the model number till Chris posted . These are a rarity where we work . The bucket was hanging off the old expansion tank . Best place to let air in when draining the system . Thanks Ed .
  • Thanks Ted

    Where is the Barometric Damper?

    Not needed?

    As usual, another great-looking install.

    Excellent

    as usual, Ron.

One question, don't you usually use a nipple and cap on the end of the header? We all know those plugs can be tough to get out but then maybe there will not be a need to add any future zones.

    One question Ron

Just wondering about why you don't pipe p/s piping with multiple zones on that boiler, I am just wondering about thermal shock to boiler, just a question, Tim. Nice looking work, and fast!
