is this is the same thing as a Boiler Return Trap? going to a job i worked on years ago that has one of these, they are having problems with the condensate level being too high in the basement (boiler in basement) causing the the 2 air handlers in the basement to back up condensate in the steam coil causing little or no heat output. another contractor works on the boiler and according one of our apperentices its running around 9 psi. i am sure this is the real problem. most of that old steam, condensate stuff does not fail. although we have recommended the homeowner install a condensate reciever tank/pump because the "new" boiler to i much smaller than the old one

i think you have it..
sounds like a pressure issue..it is a boiler return trap..shouldn't need a tank tho..nothing beats gravity..
