This one is scary

No one has any idea as to what caused this?

Maybe it was that digital watch he was wearing?

Perhaps their circulator was under/over sized?

Maybe no-one did an actual heat-loss on the house?

Maybe the boiler was piped P/S when it should not have been?

Perhaps the meter was not clocked?

What killed this boy????

Many here are more than willing to rush in where Angels fear to tread on SO many subjects, why now the silence?

What killed this boy?

A "faulty" appliance??? OR..........A "faulty" pro?

I know what my money is on.

The lawyers are coming. I know this as a fact. They are coming and you will not be able to withstand them. They are coming with proof and they will sue you into the next millenium.

So...............what are you going to do about it?

    Thanks Andrew

    I fixed the link.

A horrible thing to happen any time, but close to Christmas has got to be devastating.

    If you don't test..........

The question is what exactly has to be tested and how far do you go. I don't think there will be much disagreement here that combustion testing any burner is mandatory if you want to call yourself a technician. But to go beyond that, how many of us would build enough into our pricing to allow us the time to not only test ALL the combustion equipment in the house but also test it with the exhaust fans running, and the windows all closed. Then of course you should measure the pressure differential in/out with fans running and, oh yeah don't forget the dryer....etc etc etc.

The flat out truth is that maybe 1-2% of home buyers or home owners would pay the extra to ensure they and their family are safe. They don't see, comprehend or understand the danger.

Mandatory testing won't ever happen because the homebuilders associations and real estate lobbies are whispering in the politicians ears that they have to help keep the price down on housing. So what if there are a few dead kids along the way.

Then there's also the fact that some people mess with stuff they shouldn't. A few years ago a couple moved into a new home about 60 miles from here. This was a custom built home and was 95% completed. The HO didn't like how the B-vent chimney extended far enough past the roofline to make it visible from the road. Soooooooo, he climbed up on the roof and took enough off so it couldn't be seen anymore. A few nights later the combination of below zero temps and a wind from the right direction effectively put a lid on the chimney. IIRC the whole family died in their sleep.

I know Mark, it aggrevates the heck out of me too. I changed a burner on an oil furnace today. The HO had my local competitor, who's always dragging my name through the mud, "tune up" his furnace. It ran for a few days and quit, called him back, "fixed" it, ran for a few days, quit, called him back, "fixed it" ran for a few days, quit.............called me. I found an old Williamson oil burner with the head of the tube completely burned off. Gone. Disintegrated. Vanished. Just a hollow tube. You can imagine what the flame looked like and I pulled the Testo when it started spiking 500PPM per jump. The HO told me the competition adjusted the burner by eye and pronounced it to be in great shape.....How can you miss something like that??!!!!!
